Ben Menor, Jr.

Friday Speaker

Rooted in the principles of the Civil Rights Movement and deeply influenced by the teachings and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dr. Jean Thomas, Ben Menor, Jr. has dedicated over five decades to grassroots community organizing aimed at eliminating racism, prejudice, and discrimination. Known by many as “Manong Ben” or “Uncle Ben,” he approaches community empowerment through a model of collective action, intergenerational mentorship, and cross-cultural solidarity. At the core of his work across numerous institutions and non-profit initiatives is a commitment to strengthening organizational governance—instilling transparency, integrity, and sustainable accountability through a structured community development process.

Grassroots Movement Building & Cultural Preservation

At the heart of Menor’s work is a commitment to cultural preservation and advancing the Filipino American experience. His activist roots trace back to the historic 1965 Delano Grape Strike with the United Farm Workers (UFW), where he volunteered for food drives and helped build Agbayani Village, a retirement home for elderly Manongs. In 1970, Ben had the privilege of meeting and hearing top Filipino UFW leaders Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz speak. It was Manong Philip’s powerful speech and human fortitude that inspired Ben to step up and become a professional grassroots organizer.

Ben has also been a consistent participant in movement-building through the Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN) movement since 1975—inspired by the FYA Drill Team. Through his long-standing work with cultural dance groups, including the Tamaraw Dance Troupe, the Mabuhay Cultural Club, and his ongoing engagement with the Parangal Dance Company, Ben has worked to provide spaces for youth to connect with their roots.

Ben’s early trajectory in journalism, primarily as a photojournalist and advocate, was ignited by Alex Esclamado, a visionary leader and founder of Philippine News and major organizations serving underrepresented communities both in the U.S. and the Philippines. Inspired by Esclamado’s signature movement to right historical wrongs, Ben joined the tireless campaign fighting for full recognition and veterans’ benefits for Filipino WWII veterans—a cause deeply personal to him, as his own father was among those who served.

Ben’s foundation in community development was guided by Dorothy Cordova, whose mentorship and experience with the 1972 FYA Drill Team helped establish his non-profit community development masterplans. Continuing his commitment to historical preservation, Ben served on the publication team for Fred Cordova’s landmark book, “Filipinos: Forgotten Asian Americans,” and co-published “Pinoy Know Yourself.” This work marked a major milestone in addressing the “minority within the minority within the minority,” directly contributing to pivotal 1974 California legislation amending the state status code so that Filipinos would be officially recognized as Filipinos.

He remains actively involved in the “Where Are the Manangs” movement, an initiative dedicated to honoring the contributions of the Manangs (Filipina women) who served alongside the Manongs during the Delano Grape Strike and other seminal labor struggles, ensuring a complete and equitable historical record.

Education & Academic Credentials

Menor’s grassroots leadership is grounded in a deep academic foundation, pioneering ethnic studies program development, and a lifelong dedication to human rights, humanities, and community development:

A.A. Degree in Sociology (1972) – Foothill Community College (Founder, Filipino and Asian American Studies Program)
B.A. Degree in Community Studies with Honors (1974) – University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC)
Secondary Teaching Credential (1976) – University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC)
Honorary Doctorate Degree (2022) – United Graduate College and Seminary International

National Organizations & Strategic Leadership

Menor’s leadership extends across national civic, advocacy, and economic organizations, where he systematically applies community development frameworks to build transparent and accountable governance structures:
National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA): Charter Member and former National Director of Community Development
Federation of Philippine American Chambers of Commerce (FPACC): Former Executive Director (served for eight years)
Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS): Publication team member and co-founder of the Santa Clara County Chapter

His past public office, advisory, and volunteer service includes work as a State Commissioner for the Juvenile Justice Commission of the Governor’s Gang Prevention Task Force, and a County Commissioner for the Private Industry Council.

On an international level, he served as an advisor to former Philippine President Fidel Ramos and former Speaker of the House Jose De Venecia, Jr., contributing to initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s technological and economic landscape. Whether in the boardroom or the community center, Menor utilizes his “KISS” (Keep It Simple & Sharp) leadership approach to ensure that initiatives remain accessible, transparent, and effective for those they serve.

Community Wellness & Advocacy

Ben views his activism as a holistic responsibility. Recognizing the profound challenges facing the next generation, he is actively engaged in efforts to address the crisis of suicide ideation among Filipina girls and young women. By raising awareness and providing resources, he seeks to help build a healthier, more supportive community. For Menor, “entrepreneurship without borders” means not just economic development but also the care for the mental and emotional well-being of youth, ensuring they have the strength to carry the community forward.

Community Recognition & Legacy

Menor is deeply grateful for the community’s acknowledgment of these shared efforts. In 2023, he was selected by San Jose State University and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors as one of the top 33 Asian American Activists, featured in an educational video and school curriculum produced by SJSU-AAPI Studies, AAPI Perspectives, and JAMsj (Japanese American Museum of San Jose).

He has also been recognized by organizations such as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Santa Clara County, the Human Relations Commission of Santa Clara County, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was honored to receive the KQED “Local Asian Pacific American Community Hero Award” and, in 2004, the Gold Nugget Award for his master planning of senior housing and community center development.

His commitment to preserving history was highlighted by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) through their Legacy Month Recognition on October 20th. Menor was shocked to receive the 2024 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Joe Biden, an honor he shares with the countless colleagues, mentors, and mentees who have walked this path with him.

A Philosophy of Mentorship

For Menor, leadership is not about a title or position; it is about service. As an activist, educator, coach, mentor, and organizer, he finds the greatest reward in seeing others step into their own leadership. He believes that by documenting our stories, preserving our traditions, and supporting our veterans and our youth, we create a stronger foundation for the future.
Menor remains a lifelong student of human experience, continuing to offer his time and expertise to those working toward a more equitable and culturally conscious society. He encourages all those interested in community development and cultural heritage to participate in the ongoing efforts to build a legacy that benefits everyone.

Dr. Allan Bergano

Friday Speaker

Dr. Allan Bergano: Healthcare Pioneer, Civil Rights & Legal Trailblazer

Dr. Allan L. Bergano, DDS, is a groundbreaking dental professional, educator, civil rights advocate, and historical preservation leader whose life’s work bridges public health, legal equity, and cultural empowerment.

As a trailblazer for the Filipino American community, Dr. Bergano has spent decades breaking systemic
barriers, standing against government overreach, and fostering intergenerational consciousness for
underrepresented communities.

A Legacy Rooted in Fortitude & Civil Rights

Dr. Bergano’s passion for equity and justice is deeply influenced by the resilience of his immigrant parents. His father arrived in America during the 1920s as a teenager, persevering through systemic racism, discrimination, and the Great Depression. Working as a houseboy and dishwasher to finance his education, his father graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1936. In 1950, while returning to the Philippines, he met Allan’s mother—a dedicated educator who taught children while hiding in the jungle during World War II. They married and settled in Seattle, Washington, laying a strong foundation of fortitude, courage, and dedication to education for their family.

Growing up in Seattle’s vibrant Central District, Allan navigated the frontlines of historical social change. He experienced early school desegregation firsthand through busing, and later earned admission to the University of Washington through the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and affirmative action initiatives. Driven by a commitment to service, he made history in 1981 by becoming the first Filipino American to graduate from the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Healthcare Pioneer & Landmark Legal Victory

In 1983, Dr. Bergano expanded his trail of firsts to the East Coast, establishing his private practice in Virginia Beach and becoming the first Filipino American licensed to practice dentistry in the State of Virginia.

Over 32 years into his established practice, Dr. Bergano became a pivotal figure in a major civil rights battle against government oversight and abuse of political power:
 The Federal Ruling: When the City of Virginia Beach unlawfully denied relocation benefits to his dental practice, Dr. Bergano filed a federal lawsuit against the city (Federal District Court Case No. 2:15-cv-
00520). U.S. District Judge Henry Coke Morgan Jr. in Norfolk, VA, ruled that the City of Virginia Beach violated Dr. Bergano’s constitutional rights to due process and equal protection under the law.
 The Supreme Court Precedent: The legal battle culminated in a decisive victory before the state’s
highest court (Supreme Court of Virginia Record No. 171183, Decided December 6, 2018). The Virginia Supreme Court ruled in favor of Dr. Bergano, establishing a historic, landmark precedent protecting the constitutional rights of small business owners against eminent domain abuses and government overreach.

This historic legal victory stood as a first by a Filipino entrepreneur and demonstrated deep community support and solidarity toward two prominent Filipino community leaders, proving that grassroots unity can successfully
hold government power accountable.

Cultural Preservation & Empowerment

Recognizing that cultural identity and historical representation are fundamental to community wellness, Dr. Bergano co-founded the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society
(FANHS-HR) in 1989 alongside his wife, Edwina.

Through FANHS-HR, Dr. Bergano has championed grassroots educational initiatives, youth mentorship programs, and historical research that empower generations of Filipino Americans to explore their heritage. His visionary leadership has provided vital spaces for young people to answer two fundamental questions: Who we are and what we can become.

Driven by a lifelong belief in justice, service, and representation, Dr. Allan L. Bergano continues to lead by
example—demonstrating how personal resilience, professional achievement, legal courage, and community
activism unite to build a legacy.

Pepito Castellanes

Saturday Speaker

Pepito Castellanes was born and raised in the Philippines and immigrated to the United States in 1973. He served in the U.S. Air Force for more than seven years before earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado.

He and his wife have lived in Colorado since 1977, where they raised their three children and now enjoy time with their four grandchildren.

In 2003, he viewed a Big Bang exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum and was struck by its connection to the biblical account of creation. That experience inspired him to begin developing a book on the subject, prompting years of reading and research to build the knowledge needed to write it.

With the emergence of Al tools, he found a practical way to organize research, refine ideas, and shape his manuscript more efficiently. Rather than replacing the author’s role, these tools support his process by helping him explore topics, structure material, and focus his arguments.

He is clear that authorship remains a human responsibility. The writer must understand the subject, make the judgments, and guide the work; Al serves as an assistant, not as the authority or subject matter expert.

His current book examines the relationship between the Big Bang and the creation account in the Book of Genesis. He plans for it to become the first volume in a trilogy, with the second and third books expected before the end of 2027.
