Historic Day One of the NaFFAA Civic Leadership Forum in Detroit
Detroit, MI — August 16, 2024, marked a historic beginning for the NaFFAA Civic Leadership Forum, as Filipino American leaders from across the nation convened in a powerful display of unity, leadership, and civic engagement. From the opening breakfast to the closing remarks, Day One was filled with thought-provoking panels, inspiring keynotes, and vibrant discussions, setting the stage for a transformative conference.
The day commenced with opening remarks by NaFFAA National President Mariela Fletcher, who underscored the organization’s steadfast commitment to elevating the voices of Filipino Americans. “Today, we stand united, not just as a community, but as a force for change,” Fletcher asserted. This sentiment resonated through Senator Stephanie Chang’s keynote address, where she highlighted the pivotal roles of opportunity, equity, and justice in shaping a more inclusive society.
Sue Van, President of the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, spoke on the crucial role of philanthropy in empowering underrepresented communities. She declared, “Before the Coulter Foundation sunsets, we will leave a gift that keeps on giving—a comprehensive list that no other foundation has done before.” Complementing this, Nicholas Turton, Director of Communications for AAPI Data, emphasized, “Data is empowering; it represents a person, their stories, and their experiences.”
Throughout the day, panels delved into topics such as civic engagement, the power of data, and coalition-building. Leaders from various Filipino organizations shared strategies for enhancing civic participation and fostering strong networks. “Coming together is the first step; keeping together is progress; and working together is success,” remarked Manelita Dayon, North Central Regional Vice President of the Philippine Nurses Association of America.
The forum concluded with poignant reflections from Mayor Ron Falconi, who reminded attendees, “Let’s celebrate our achievements, but also pass our traditions and values to the next generation. Our stories deserve to be retold and remembered.”
The day ended on a high note with the lively “NaFFAA Got Talent” showcase, where representatives from different NaFFAA regions displayed their talents in singing, dancing, and entertainment. This spirited event fostered camaraderie and celebration, underscoring the vibrancy and diversity of the Filipino American community.
Looking ahead, Day Two of the NaFFAA National Empowerment Conference promises to be equally impactful, featuring sessions on combatting Asian hate, promoting mental health, and financial literacy. The day will culminate in the much-anticipated NaFFAA elections and a Gala Night celebration.
Reflecting on the day’s events, NaFFAA National Chair Brendan Flores stated, “This day has been a testament to the resilience and unity of our community. We are not just participants in this journey; we are the leaders guiding our future.”
