NaFFAA Statement on the Escalating Violence on the Middle East and its Effect on the Filipino Diaspora

[Updated as of 3/2/2026]

The National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) is deeply concerned by the escalating violence and growing instability in the Middle East. Our hearts are especially with the 2.4+ million members of the Filipino diaspora living and working across the region. We pray for your safety and protection during this uncertain time. If you encounter any danger or difficulty, please immediately contact your nearest Philippine embassy or consulate for assistance.

We also extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mary Anne Velasquez de Vera, the Filipino caregiver tragically killed in the crossfire. Filipinos are known around the world for our compassion and care – many make the sacrifice to leave behind their own families in the Philippines to look after the children, elderly, and loved ones of others. The loss of Mary Anne is not only a tragedy for her family and community, but a painful reminder of how war can reach even those whose life’s work is to nurture and protect.

The Philippines is a nation shaped by the wounds of conflict, from colonization to occupation. We know that war does not ultimately benefit humanity – it takes lives, shatters communities, and fractures families across generations. In this moment of sorrow and uncertainty, NaFFAA is guided by kapwa (our shared identity), and we stand in solidarity with all those affected, affirm the sanctity of human life, and urge our leaders to work toward peace whenever possible.
