July 10, 2024 – The National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) is deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic death of 74-year-old Corazon Dandan, who was senselessly pushed in front of an oncoming Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train in San Francisco on July 1, 2024. This horrific act of violence took place at Powell Street Station and resulted in the loss of a beloved community member.
“Trevor Belmont” or Hoak Taing, a 49-year-old homeless man with a history of criminal activity and mental health problems, has been charged with murder and elder abuse in connection with this incident. This case highlights the increasing dangers faced by the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, particularly our elders, and underscores the urgent need for mental health awareness and funding.
NaFFAA National President Mariela Fletcher stated, “The perpetrator’s mental health problems led to this tragic act. Mental health is a profound social issue that demands immediate attention and action.”
Kevin Suarez, NaFFAA Northern California President, added, “The safety of our community is paramount. We urge local leaders and law enforcement to implement stronger protective measures for our public transit systems. Our hearts go out to the Dandan family during this difficult time.”
According to the 2023 Hate Crime Report released by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, hate crimes against the AAPI community have surged by 27% in the past year. NaFFAA fully supports initiatives led by Attorney General Bonta to combat hate crimes and protect vulnerable communities.
Dr. Rommel Rivera, a long-time Naffa leader from Philadelphia, emphasized, “The tragic and untimely death of Ms. Corazon Dandan has sent shockwaves through the Filipino American community, amplifying the deep-rooted concerns about the escalating wave of Asian hate crimes. This harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for increased vigilance and heightened awareness among Filipino Americans when navigating public spaces. There is an urgent need to champion for more accessible and equitable mental health care resources.”
NaFFAA continues to promote its Anti-Asian Hate Initiatives, providing resources, support, and advocacy to empower the AAPI community. “We are committed to working with local authorities and community leaders to ensure the safety and well-being of all Filipino Americans,” Fletcher stated. “Together, we can create a safer and more inclusive society.”
