Washington, DC – July 16, 2024 – The National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) is deeply saddened by the recent wave of political violence that has shaken our nation. The tragic incident at the campaign rally in Butler, PA, underscores the urgent need for unity and the rejection of violence in all its forms. Our hearts go out to the family of Corey Comperatore, who lost his life, and we extend our wishes for the swift recovery of former President Donald Trump.
Asian American politicians across the country, including Vice President Kamala Harris, have condemned the shooting, labeling it an assassination attempt. President Joe Biden has also paused his campaign efforts to condemn the incident, emphasizing the importance of unity in these trying times.
NaFFAA stands firmly with all communities in condemning any form of violence, whether it be physical, verbal, or systemic. The Filipino American community has a long history of advocating for peace, justice, and the protection of democratic values. We believe that every individual, regardless of their background or political affiliation, deserves to live in a society free from fear and violence.
“Our mission encompasses National Advocacy, Leadership Development, Civic Engagement, and Advancing Culture and Arts. We are committed to promoting the welfare and well-being of the Filipino American community through these pillars,” stated NaFFAA National President Mariela Fletcher. “We envision a future where Filipino Americans are recognized and respected for their significant contributions to society, and where they can fully participate in the democratic process without fear of violence or discrimination.”
In these challenging times, we call on all Americans to come together and recommit to the principles of democracy, peace, and mutual respect. Violence has no place in our political discourse or in our communities. It is through dialogue, understanding, and cooperation that we can build a better, safer, and more inclusive nation for all.
We urge our leaders and fellow citizens to lead by example, fostering a political environment that prioritizes the safety and dignity of every individual. Let us work together to create a society where differences are resolved through constructive conversation and where every person can pursue their dreams without the shadow of violence.
