NaFFAA Celebrates 2024 Milestones and Embraces a Hopeful Transition to 2025

Washington, D.C. – As 2024 draws to a close, the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) reflects on a remarkable year of growth, empowerment, and unity, culminating in a historic leadership transition beginning in January 2025. This year, NaFFAA’s unwavering dedication to uplifting Filipino Americans led to significant milestones, collaborative achievements, and a strengthened community poised for a brighter future.

Reflecting on 2024 Milestones

January: A Historic Leadership Summit in Manila

NaFFAA held its annual Leadership Summit in the Philippines at the historic Manila Hotel, bringing together over 30 regional and state leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue, reconnect with Filipino heritage, and build impactful strategies for the future. Among the featured speakers were five former NaFFAA youth leaders now residing in the Philippines, who shared their journeys of ‘realizing the American dream with a Filipino heart.’ Leaders met with esteemed officials, including then-Senate President Jose Miguel Zubiri, as National President Mariela Fletcher reflected, ‘This summit strengthens the bond between our communities and reinforces our shared commitment to progress.’

Throughout the conference, NaFFAA leaders collaborated with other government leaders such as Mayor Maria Sheila ‘Honey’ Lacuna of Manila and Mayor Abigail ‘Nancy’ Binay of Makati. The summit concluded with a visit to Clark, where leaders explored the advanced developments in the area under the guidance of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) led by Delfin Lorenzana, highlighting the progress and innovation in the region. The summit included panels on disaster relief, cultural preservation, and leadership development, fostering transformative experiences and forging lifelong connections. Reflecting on the summit, National Operations Officer Ryan Namata remarked, “Meeting fellow Fil-Am community leaders in the Philippines felt like coming home. It deepened our commitment to bridging our two nations through impactful initiatives.”

May: Celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month

NaFFAA proudly joined the AANHPI community in celebrating heritage and achievements across the U.S. Landmark events included the Baybayin Tattoo Exhibit in San Francisco and Hawaii’s approval of a statewide Filipino history and culture course—significant milestones for cultural preservation and education.

June: Philippine Independence Day Commemorations

NaFFAA honored Philippine Independence Day with events emphasizing cultural pride and resilience. National President Mariela Fletcher highlighted the importance of this day, stating, “Our ancestors’ legacy inspires us to preserve our culture and build a better future for generations to come.”

July: Advocacy for Justice and Peace

NaFFAA mourned the tragic loss of Corazon Dandan, raising awareness about mental health and safety in public spaces. Additionally, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to peace and democracy amid political unrest, calling for unity and resilience.

August: A Defining National Empowerment Conference

The 15th National Empowerment Conference (NEC) in Detroit, Michigan, brought together Filipino American leaders for strategic dialogue and visionary initiatives. Highlights included transformative keynotes, data-driven discussions, and the election of Ryan Namata as NaFFAA’s new National President.

A standout moment was the keynote address by Sue Van of the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, who amplified the importance of the Fil-Am Vote among youth and representation in office. Her speech galvanized attendees, particularly the large youth delegation present, underscoring the next generation’s role in shaping the future.

September: Empowering Filipino American Voters

In recognition of National Voter Registration Day, NaFFAA launched initiatives to engage the Filipino American electorate. With nearly 2 million eligible voters, the campaign underscored the community’s growing influence in shaping America’s future.

October: Celebrating Filipino American History Month

From regional events to White House recognition of Filipino American frontliners, FAHM 2024 showcased the resilience, contributions, and unity of Filipino Americans nationwide. NaFFAA spearheaded the Tulong Sulong initiative to support disaster-stricken communities in the Philippines.

Collaboration with other national organizations, guided by the leadership of Loida Lewis and Brendan Flores, played a pivotal role in amplifying NaFFAA’s efforts during FAHM. This partnership elevated initiatives celebrating Filipino American history and contributions, further uniting the community under a shared vision.

November: Historic Achievements and Gratitude

NaFFAA celebrated the election of over 25 Filipino Americans to various government positions during the 2024 elections, a testament to the community’s growing influence. Additionally, the organization congratulated one of NaFFAA’s founding members, Loida Lewis, on her historic nomination to the Millennium Challenge Corporation by President Joe Biden. Thanksgiving reflections highlighted the community’s resilience and generosity.

November also brought significant reasons to be thankful. NaFFAA extended its gratitude to Congresswoman Grace Meng, Assemblyman Steven Raga, and NaFFAA NY leaders, led by State President Rachelle Peraz-Ocampo, along with the entire Filipino American community, for securing $1.6 million in funding to support the community. This achievement represents a victory not only for NaFFAA NY and Queens but for Filipino Americans across the nation. This funding creates powerful leverage toward establishing a lasting space that embodies the history and heritage of Filipino Americans. NaFFAA encourages community members to follow NaFFAA NY’s progress and contribute to making this vision a reality.

Appreciation for 2024’s Trailblazers

National President Mariela Fletcher shared, “This year has been extraordinary. From cultural celebrations to civic engagement, our community broke barriers and embraced opportunities. I am deeply grateful to our regional leaders, volunteers, and supporters who made this possible.”

Outgoing National Chair Brendan Flores added, “2024 was a testament to the strength and unity of Filipino Americans. Together, we’ve set the stage for a brighter future.”

Honoring Brendan Flores: A Man of Vision and Unity

Brendan Flores leaves an indelible mark on NaFFAA’s history. As the youngest National Chair and President, Brendan’s visionary leadership quadrupled membership, strengthened corporate partnerships, and amplified Filipino American voices nationwide. He championed pivotal initiatives, including securing the Congressional Gold Medal for Filipino WWII veterans and leading efforts to combat anti-Asian hate. Reflecting on his tenure, Brendan stated, “Leadership is about holding the baton together, ensuring every generation contributes to writing a better history for Filipino Americans.” Brendan’s legacy will inspire generations to come.

NaFFAA proudly welcomes its new leadership team, ushering in a new era of growth and empowerment. Ryan Namata assumes the role of National President, joined by Chris Rivera as Vice President, Giselle Rushford as Secretary, Rod Mercado as Treasurer, and Mariela Fletcher as National Chair. Each brings a wealth of experience and a shared vision for advancing NaFFAA’s mission.

Deep gratitude is extended to outgoing officers Angeles “Jelly” Carandang, who served as Treasurer; Aldrin Carreon, who served as Secretary; and Brendan Flores, who concludes his transformative tenure as National Chair. Their dedication and service have strengthened NaFFAA’s foundation and paved the way for future achievements.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Incoming National President Ryan Namata expressed optimism, stating, “The future of NaFFAA lies in empowering the next generation. Together, we will create opportunities, amplify our voices, and inspire change.”

As NaFFAA embarks on this new chapter, the organization calls on Filipino Americans to unite in action. “Empowering our youth and fostering unity are small steps that lead to lasting change,” Namata added. “Let us remember: if it hasn’t worked out yet, it’s not the end.”
