Advocate for Filipino Americans | Community Leader
Mariela Fletcher is a dynamic leader, serving as the National President of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA). With a strong background in real estate as a licensed broker in Washington and a history of successful entrepreneurship in the Philippines, Mariela champions unity and empowerment for Filipino Americans. Her dedication to community service is evident through her leadership roles at NaFFAA, IDIC Filipino Senior & Family Services, and her contributions to various community-building initiatives.
Recognized for her business acumen and community advocacy, Mariela has made significant impacts across the Seattle area, including her work on the Commercial Affordability Advisory Committee and her efforts to bring Filipino culture to the mainstream. She is a passionate advocate for ensuring that future generations of Filipino Americans have a voice and a bright future, inspired by the values of service instilled by her parents.

About Senator Chang
Opportunity, access, equity, justice and service are the core values driving Senator Stephanie Chang, the first Asian American woman elected to the Michigan legislature. She worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade before serving two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives and then as the Democratic Floor Leader for her first term in the Senate. She is currently serving her second term in the Michigan Senate and is the Senate Democratic Policy and Steering Chair.
She served as state director for NextGen Climate Michigan, alumni engagement and evaluation coordinator for the Center for Progressive Leadership in Michigan, deputy director for the Campaign for Justice and as an organizer for Michigan United/One United Michigan. She also worked as a community engagement coordinator for the James and Grace Lee Boggs School and assistant to Grace Lee Boggs, an activist, writer, and speaker. The senator is a co-founder of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote-Michigan and Rising Voices; she also serves on the board of the Southwest Detroit Community Justice Center.
Chang earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degrees in public policy and social work from the University of Michigan. She lives in Detroit with her husband, Sean Gray, and two young daughters.

She will also delve into the “Coulter Process,” and share insights on how this process has driven significant advancements in voter participation, representation, and community resilience.
Empowering Underrepresented Communities
Sue Van serves as the President and CEO of The Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, the largest funder of civic engagement initiatives for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders (AANHPI), and American Indian and Alaskan Natives (AIAN). Recognizing the historic underfunding and lack of representation faced by these communities, Sue has led the Foundation in a mission to build long-term power and visibility. Since 2010, the Foundation has provided critical seed investments and risk capital to national and state-based organizations, starting with AANHPI communities and expanding to AIAN communities in 2018. The results of this support were evident in the 2020 Census and elections, where AANHPI communities achieved record participation despite significant challenges. By the time the Foundation sunsets in 2025, it will have invested $250 million in these underrepresented communities, leaving a lasting impact on their civic engagement and empowerment.

Speaker: Nicholas Turton

Nicholas Turton serves as the Director of Communications for AAPI Data, overseeing the development and implementation of communications strategies that support AAPI Data’s mission.Nicholas has a diverse array of experience leveraging strategic communications as a powerful tool to shift the needle on pressing social and civic issues. Before joining the team at AAPI Data, Nicholas was a Communications Manager at The Trevor Project, where he oversaw rapid response efforts to combat anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric in the media; amplified intersectional polling and peer-reviewed research on LGBTQ+ young people; and led Trevor’s It’s Still Happening campaign, drawing attention to the continued prevalence of conversion therapy practitioners in the U.S.
Prior to that, Nicholas served as a Senior Account Executive at Fenton, a social change agency, working across a number of social justice issues. Notably, he served as the communications strategy lead on the agency’s work to support Stop AAPI Hate’s media, messaging, and public relations efforts — which contributed to prestigious recognition and awards including TIME100, a Webby Award, and PRWeek Award.
Nicholas has a master’s degree in nonprofit management from Antioch University Los Angeles and a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Nicholas is based in Los Angeles, CA.

Marie Cunning is the President of the Federation of Philippine American Chambers of Commerce (FPACC), where she has dedicated nearly a decade to empowering Filipino American entrepreneurs and fostering international trade between the Philippines, the U.S., and beyond. She also serves as a Board Trustee for NaFFAA, co-chairing the Finance Committee, and has been a long-time leader within Lions Clubs International, where she currently holds the position of International Director (2023-2025) and previously served as District Governor for Lions International District 21N Arizona (2019-2020). Marie is the Founder and President of the Filipino American Business Chamber of Commerce of AZ (FABCCA) and holds leadership roles in various other organizations, including Director At Large for the Asian American Association of Arizona (AAAA), and Chairman of the Asian American Republican Coalition (2020-2024).
Marie’s commitment to business growth and community service is also demonstrated through her ownership of Arizona Discount Flooring and her role as President of Arista Development, Inc. Her leadership and impact have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2023 TOFA (The Outstanding Filipino Awards) for International Leadership, the 2024 Lustre Award for Outstanding Global Leadership, and the 2017 Asian American Hall of Fame Woman of the Year Award. In addition to her business and humanitarian efforts, she has also made significant contributions as a Co-Producer of the LUZVIMINDA Fashion Show, and in her earlier years, she was a former beauty queen and model.
Marie’s dedication to her community has been acknowledged with several prestigious honors, including the International President’s Award for Outstanding Lion (2010), the 2006 Outstanding Asian American Citizen awarded by U.S. Senator Kyle, and the 2018 Leadership Award from the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS). Her influence extends across both local and international platforms, making her a key figure in promoting Filipino American leadership and excellence.

Dr. Angelica Cortez (she/her) is a nonprofit founder, public policy professional and entrepreneur. Voted as a Silicon Valley 40 Under 40 and Woman of Influence, she is the mind behind multiple civic and health equity initiatives across the state and nation.
The founder and executive director of LEAD Filipino, a regional civic organization based in San Jose, her leadership has driven the first Cancer Study in Santa Clara County focused on Filipinos with the Stanford Cancer Institute, the opening of Delano Manongs Park in East San Jose, and premier Filipino voter turnout and civic leadership programs across California. In addition to serving as the Senior Vice President for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Pacific Clinics, she continues to grow LEAD Filipino’s state legislative agenda, cultural programs and civic campaigns at the intersection of community development, power building and systems change.
Her previous experience includes executive roles with policy and advocacy organizations, such as the California Immigrant Policy Center and as a staffer with California State Assemblymember Rich Gordon. Dr. Cortez sits on numerous boards and advisory committees, including the National Board of Trustees for the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), Board of Directors for Sacred Heart Community Service, and Advisory Committee for San Jose Spotlight. She frequently speaks on LGBTQ+ leadership, Asian American political engagement, social infrastructure and economic empowerment.

Manelita “Bong” Dayon serves as the North Central Regional Vice President of the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA). With extensive experience in nursing and leadership, Bong plays a crucial role in advancing the mission of PNAA, which includes promoting the welfare of Filipino American nurses and enhancing their contributions to the healthcare industry. In her capacity as Regional Vice President, Bong focuses on strengthening the organization’s regional chapters, fostering collaboration among members, and supporting initiatives that advocate for the professional development and well-being of nurses across the region. Her dedication to service and leadership has been instrumental in driving the success of PNAA’s programs and outreach efforts.

Jasmine Rivera is Co-Executive Director for Rising Voices, a nonprofit civic education and advocacy organization whose mission is to develop the leadership of Asian American women and families in the state of Michigan. Jasmine was born in Detroit to a proud Filipino-American family, where she was raised by her activist parents to always engage in action and speak truth to power. This upbringing has directly led to her decades of service as an organizer, teacher and leader in the nonprofit social justice advocacy and arts communities. Jasmine graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in International Relations at James Madison College and from Columbia University with an MFA in Film Directing. Her experience as an artist and director have enabled Jasmine to apply her skills in narrative storytelling and communications to help build Asian American community and empowerment. Makibaka! Huwag matakot! (“Fight! Don’t be afraid!”) is one of her favorite Tagalog phrases.

Hon. Mayor Ron Falconi, City of Brunswick, Ohio
Ron Falconi began his tenure as Mayor of the City of Brunswick, Ohio in 2014 and is currently serving his third term. Prior to his mayoral role, he was a member of the Brunswick City Council from 2008 to 2013. Notably, he is the first Filipino-American to hold a mayoral position in the state of Ohio.
In addition to his political career, Ron has been a practicing lawyer for nearly 30 years, dealing with cases pertaining to family law, custody, criminal defense, and immigration cases. Before going into private practice, he was an Assistant County Prosecutor for the state of Ohio. Ron has a BA in Political Science with a concentration in International Studies from John Carroll University and a Law Degree from the University of Akron.
During his time on Brunswick City council, he chaired the Economic Development and Planning and Zoning committees, and served on the Safety, Finance, and Building and Building Code committees. Ron was also honored as one of ten Asian American leaders from across the country selected to travel to Japan as guests of the Japanese government and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During this visit, they discussed politics, culture, business, and international relations.
He has been married to his wife, Dr. Genevive Falconi, for over 25 years, and they have two adult children.

Aisha Farooqi is committed to welcoming refugees and immigrants and building a robust refugee resettlement program. Farooqi and her family moved to the United States after her mother earned a scholarship to study chemistry at the University of Detroit. While her mother studied, her father worked at a small business. Through her parents, she learned the value of hard work and perseverance. The owners of the small business, the Leonellis, embraced Farooqi’s family as their own. They exemplified the meaning of community. Farooqi attended Detroit public schools, eventually graduating from her mother’s alma mater with a degree in law. Currently, she works as a real estate attorney and serves on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the City of Sterling Heights. She is a member of the Macomb County Black Caucus and the Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council of Detroit.

For nearly three decades, Eric Salcedo has advocated for the rights of underrepresented and disempowered communities in nonprofit and government sectors. Eric was previously with the Democratic National Committee as the AAPI Coalitions Director. During the 2020 presidential election, he was the Coordinated Campaign’s Midwest Regional Coalitions Director for the Biden for President campaign. Afterwards, he served as the Agency Engagement Liaison for the EPA on the Biden-Harris Transition.
From 2014 to 2019, Eric was the National Field Director at APIAVote where he trained local community organizations across the country on best practices for voter registration, volunteer recruitment, and mobilization of the AAPI electorate.
Eric received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Northwestern University. As an undergraduate, he led the student movement that established the university’s Asian American Studies Program.

Hon. Steven Raga (New York)
Steven Raga is honored to serve as the State Assemblymember for New York’s District 30, representing the diverse communities of Woodside, Elmhurst, and Jackson Heights. With over 20 years of experience in public service, he has been privileged to hold roles such as Executive Director of Woodside on the Move, Policy & Advocacy Manager at Susan G. Komen, Chief of Staff for Assemblymember Brian Barnwell, and Senior Strategist at AARP. Steven has had the opportunity to contribute to various boards, including the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) and Queens LGBT Pride, and is the founder of Pilipino American Unity for Progress (UniPro) in Woodside. He also serves on the U.S. Federal Commission on Civil Rights’ New York State Advisory Committee, where he works alongside others to address critical issues like housing, education, and prison reform.
Steven values education as a tool for service, holding an MBA from Cornell University and an MPA from CUNY Baruch, among other qualifications. He is grateful for the opportunities to further his knowledge through fellowships at institutions like Cornell Law School, CUNY, and the Harvard Kennedy School, all of which have helped him better serve his community.
Hon. Mai Xiong (Michigan)
State Rep. Mai Xiong serves Michigan’s 13th House District, representing parts of Warren and Detroit. Born in a Thai refugee camp to Hmong parents who fled Laos after supporting the U.S. during the Vietnam War, Xiong’s family resettled in Akron, Ohio, where they became U.S. citizens. After earning a BFA in graphic design, she moved to Warren, Michigan, where she started a small business designing and selling women’s clothing. Driven by a desire to give back to her community, Xiong entered public service, first serving on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners, where she focused on connecting small businesses with public resources and supporting critical services for seniors, veterans, and families. She was also selected as a Taubman Fellow and participated in Michigan State University’s Michigan Political Leadership Program. Now, as a state representative, Xiong is committed to supporting small businesses, advocating for living wages, cutting taxes for working families, and investing in public education to ensure quality opportunities for all children.

Larcy Douglas manages the day-to-day operations behind the scenes and leads the CPFuture communitiy programs carefully designed to meet the needs of young people to get excited about their civic responsibilities. Her passion for working with youth and young people spans over a decade of leading organizations and programs dedicated to empowering and helping them become stronger leaders of themselves and others. As a systems thinker, she is ready to take on any important role to develop systems to improve the day-to-day functions of an organization carefully finding the balance between efficiency and effectiveness.
She is currently leading Common Power Future, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. She immigrated to the United States as a child with her mother, and is a UW alum making her the first in ther family to attend and graduate from an American College.

Rebeka Islam is a passionate advocate for Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) rights and resources, driven by her personal experiences as an immigrant and her deep commitment to community service. As the Executive Director of APIA Vote-MI, she works tirelessly to ensure that AAPI voices are heard and represented in civic matters. Her advocacy journey began as a teenager when she led fundraising efforts for Hurricane Ike victims, which ignited her lifelong dedication to helping underserved communities. Rebeka has since expanded her impact through various leadership roles, including serving on the board of American Citizens for Justice and volunteering with the League of Women Voters of Michigan. Her work is fueled by the desire to prevent others from facing the hardships she and her family endured as immigrants, and she is committed to empowering all citizens to participate in civic life.

Holistic Filipino Leadership: Integrating Physical Wellness and Effective Leadership
Jennifer Samuel, Co-owner of Perseverance

My hard work comes from the strength and perseverance from my immigrant parents. Because of them, I have seen both struggle and successes. I am the co-owner of Perseverance, a training gym in Denver and Aurora. My fitness journey started from the age of two when dance/fitness was a big part of my life. My aunt competed in the Seoul Korea Olympics and grandfather played tennis in senior leagues. In college, I taught fitness and dance at various studios and made a name for myself. Even though I had a corporate career, I became certified in personal training, spinning, and boxing. My corporate career spans 18 years in consulting specializing in digital marketing, operations management, project management, and consulting. I’ve worked with Fortune 500 companies and small businesses. I enjoy volunteering in Filipino, Asian Pacific Islander, and Black communities, mentoring youth programs, along with directing cultural and contemporary dance. Fun fact: I am the first Filipino American on the Denver Broncos Cheerleader team.

About Our Speakers
Roland Hwang is an attorney and president of American Citizens for Justice, an organization devoted to civil rights advocacy and education focused on the AANHPI community. Mr. Hwang teaches AANHPI history at the University of Michigan. He has served as a Michigan assistant attorney general, as a hearing referee for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and served as chair of the Michigan Advisory Committee to the US Commission on Civil Rights.

Abbey Eusebio is the Anti-Hate Action Center Manager at the Chinese American Service League, where she leads efforts to combat hate and promote safety within the Asian American community. With over a decade of experience in constituent services, Abbey has been a prominent advocate for the Filipino American community in Illinois and has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations in Chicago. Her extensive background includes roles such as Community Outreach Liaison for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and Constituent Advocate for U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky. Abbey’s work is driven by her commitment to ensuring that all communities have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
Kevin Amaro is a Chicago native and educator by heart. Graduating from DePaul University with both a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations and Advertising and a Master of Arts in Applied Diplomacy. Kevin is the Community engagement specialist with the Anti-Hate Action Center at CASL where he facilitates the community engagement, education, and programmatic strategy, with a particular focus on building relationships with diverse values-aligned organizations, community partners, and service providers. Kevin has worked within higher education and as an organizer.

How do mental health issues — such as anxiety, depression, and stress — have tangible effects on physical well-being? Is treating mental health just as vital as addressing physical ailments? Our experts will explore common mental health challenges within the Filipino American community (including a cultural stigma surrounding mental health) and offer strategies for integrating mental health care into overall health practices. From early intervention, holistic approaches to treatment, to the role of community support in promoting mental wellness — these experts will discuss how we can break down barriers to mental health care, and foster an environment where mental health is recognized as an essential component of overall health.
About Our Speakers
Dr. Rommel Rivera, MD is a highly experienced psychiatrist based in Chester, PA, with over 45 years of medical expertise. A graduate of the University of the East / Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, Dr. Rivera specializes in psychopharmacology and medication management, focusing on treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, and mood disorders. He is affiliated with Chester County Hospital and Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where he is known for his expert approach to managing complex psychiatric conditions.
Dr. Rivera is also a physician-psychiatrist based in Philadelphia, specializing in the evaluation and treatment of mental health disorders. He is passionate about empowering communities through the promotion of mental health and wellness and is dedicated to eliminating the stigma around mental health. As the Immediate Past President of the Association of Philippine Physicians in America, Dr. Rivera continues to be a respected figure in his field, contributing to both medical practice and community health initiatives.

Dr. Doree An Espiritu, MD is the Medical Director of the Behavioral Health Services Adult Outpatient Division and the Service Chief of Psychiatry of the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. She co-led the spread of the Behavioral Health Integration with Primary Care (BHI) initiative which is now live across all of Henry Ford Health’s Primary Care Clinics. She is board-certified in both Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry and is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
In addition to her administrative role, she maintains an active practice seeing adult and geriatric patients in the outpatient setting and Consultation Liaison. She is a volunteer Psychiatrist with the Angat Buhay Bayanihan E-Konsulta in the Philippines. Dr. Espiritu finished her psychiatry residency in Adult Psychiatry at the Henry Ford Health System and then went on to do a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at Wayne State University. She was trained by the founders of Perfect Depression Care/Zero Suicide (Blues-Busters team) and has been a staunch advocate for suicide prevention and is now serving as a content-expert for Henry Ford’s Zero Suicide International/MI MIND CQI with Blue Cross Blue Shield of MI. She has received numerous awards including the Henry Ford Health System Shadow of the Leader, the Dr. Joseph Ponka Caring Physician of the Year and has been a consistent Hour Detroit “Top Doc” in Psychiatry from 2009-2023. Dr. Espiritu’s special interests are issues in Geriatric Psychiatry, Behavioral Health Integration In Primary Care, Non-Motor Symptoms of Parkinson’s, and Spirituality in Psychiatry. Dr. Espiritu has also been the champion for virtual care and digital mental Health.
