NaFFAA to Host Quest for Social Justice Community Webinar Series
Black Pioneers, Government Leaders and Corporate Trainers Provide Insights and Resources for Filipino American Community
Washington, D.C. (June 29, 2020) – The National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) acknowledges our proximity to power and intends to create a space for dialogue. We invite our Filipino Community to listen and learn about the injustices that are currently going on in the world and unite on a path forward.
NaFFAA National Chairman and President, Brendan Flores, issued the following statement on the national demonstrations and calls for justice across the United States.
“The issues of the past weeks are not political, they are humanitarian. Now more than ever, it is time we come together as a community to not just learn about the issues of our black brothers and sisters but to also take action. This starts with looking inwards and recognizing our privileges as non-Black individuals and constructing a space for dialogue and collaboration.
NaFFAA’s mission is to promote the welfare and well-being of the four million Filipinos and Filipino Americans throughout the United States. However, we cannot, and have never done this alone. From WWII to the International Hotel, the Black community has stood in solidarity with the Filipino community. Now, we must do the same for them.”
As part of its internal activities, NaFFAA will first examine the history of anti-blackness and colorism to understand its roots and influence in the Filipino community. In its public webinars, NaFFAA hopes to provide the opportunity to have a conversation with Black pioneers, leaders, and changemakers. Our organization also hopes to raise awareness of the advocacy revolving around the Black community and how our government leaders are pledging their support for social justice. As we return to our lives and reflect on our due diligence, we will share methods and best practices for addressing racism and equality in the workplace.

This matter is on all of us as non-Black individuals, to actively educate ourselves on anti-Blackness and abolish it from our collective consciousness. Violence on Black bodies should not be normalized. NaFFAA calls on the Filipino community to fight together against the systemic murder and oppression of Black lives. We must acknowledge that we occupy a position of privilege, and embrace that the onus is on us to actively work for the liberation of Black individuals. Please join NaFFAA as we educate ourselves and learn how to be effective allies as we reach for a more equitable future.
